Exploring Ancient Israel: Was Israelite Religion Unique?
Wednesday, September 10, 2025 • 17 Elul 5785
7:00 PM - 8:30 PMFinger Board Room & ZoomFor a long time, the Israelite religion was considered absolutely unique in its monotheism, its worship and understanding of God, and God's deep involvement in history. However, our special guest, Dr. Caryn Tamber-Rosenau, will help us examine the archaeology and literature of Israel's ancient neighbors to offer a new perspective on our ancient sacred literature. We will discuss clues to the real relationship between Israelite and neighboring religions, asking questions such as:
- What or who was Asherah, and why do so many ancient inscriptions mention it...or her?
- What does a Moabite inscription about the god Kemosh have in common with biblical treatments of the Israelite God?
- Are there hints of a hymn to Ba'al in the psalm we sing when returning the Torah scrolls to the ark?
This program is presented by the Adult Education Committee.
In the Notes section below, please include if you are planning to attend IN PERSON or on ZOOM. Thank you!
