Tuesday, March 2, 2021 18 Adar 5781

7:00 PM - 8:30 PMZoom

Jewish Magic and Superstition: This class will examine concepts of Jewish magic and superstition from the 10th - 15th century, identifying numerous myths, legends, and folklore surrounding the familiar, daily Jewish rituals practiced in homes and synagogues across the world. From magical creatures, charms, amulets, Zoroastrianism, and elaborate forms of divination and meditation, we will survey a variety of performative, mystical elements that emerged throughout the High and Late Middle Ages. This course is designed to provide a more nuanced understanding of how "kabbalistic" customs and worship developed and matured into a rational, post-enlightenment system of theological interpretations and doctrines.
