Prayer is a traditional method by which we connect with God. Through prayer, we thank God for all we have and ask God to bless us, our families, and the entire Jewish community. Throughout the generations, Reform Jewish prayer has evolved in response to changing times and circumstances. We see this natural and organic evolution happening today, even within our own congregation. For instance, many people now incorporate more traditional customs, such as bowing during specific prayers or covering their eyes during the recitation of Sh’ma. It is wonderful that so many people feel welcome to pray in personal ways and with new meaning in traditional prayer customs.

However, not everyone knows how, why, or when to include some traditional customs in their prayers. To meet this need, over the course of this year we will hold educational classes about prayer. We will explore the how, the why, and the meaning behind the prayer service and various customs. We will also convene a learners’ minyan (service) so that everyone has the opportunity to learn in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The educational sessions and learners’ minyan will be led by Rabbi Samuel Rheins.
