Congregation Beth Israel is honored to welcome Israeli academic, politician, and women’s rights activist Dr. Ruth Calderon, Scholar-in-Residence, for Shabbat Evening Service and Torah Study on April 4 and 5.
A Tel Aviv native, Dr. Calderon holds a Master of Arts and PhD in Talmud from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She was elected to the Israeli Knesset in 2013, where she quickly rose to celebrity status for her passion to bring Talmud and Jewish texts to all Jews regardless of religious observance or affiliation. Dr. Calderon is the founder of two institutions devoted to the study of sacred texts: Alma, Home for Hebrew Culture in Tel Aviv; and Elul Beit Midrash, the first academy where secular and religious men and women are taught together.
Dr. Calderon's visit is underwritten by a generous grant from the Alexander Family Israel Programming Fund.
